Enormous flower show promotions underway

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) has already begun promoting the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show, scheduled for March 6-13.

The theme of the 2011 show is "Springtime in Paris."

"We're going to amp it up. . . . We want to make Flower Show week what Fashion Week is to New York City," PHS president Drew Becher told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The newspaper reports that the annual event, which debuted in 1829, is one of the biggest and most respected flower shows in the country.

"Paris intrigues and entertains like no other city," said Flower Show designer Sam Lemheney. "The horticulture and culture will transport visitors to another place, all while inspiring them to create wonderful gardens at home."

Cancan dancers will be on hand to entertain patrons and food stands serving crepes and other French specialties will be available.

In addition to displays and exhibits, the show will include awards chosen by the Society of American Florists, which recognizes outstanding new cut flower varieties every year. Those award-winners will be on display and for sale at the show.

The Philadelphia Flower show attracts nearly 250,000 visitors each year.
