¡Feliz día de la madre!

"Happy Mother's Day" translates to ¡Feliz día de la madre! in spanish. The word for mother is madre, but just like in the US where we say mom instead of the more formal greeting of "mother", in Mexico - mami and mamá are typically used.

Adult children send gifts of colorful flowers - especially roses, and cards to their Mexican mothers

In Mexico, adult children will travel home on the evening of May 9th to prepare for the upcoming festivities and to pay respect to their mother. They honor the stong woman, who made many sacrifices while bringing them up. She taught them that the love of the family is first and foremost in life. If you can't be home with your Mexican mom on Mother's Day be sure to order a bouquet of colorful flowers to be delivered and send her a card. And of course, don't forget to phone or Skype your mamá to let her know that how much you love and miss her!

On Día de las Madres, children living in Mexico pay homage to their mother by making handmade cards and gifts at school. If May 10th falls on a school day, with the help of their teacher, they will entertain mamita by dancing, telling jokes and singing to express their gratitude and love.

Mothers Day in Mexico is a fun, colorful festive occasion. It is tradition to go to her house early in the morning and awaken her by serending her with the song "Las Mañanitas", which is the birthday song of Mexico. Instead of singing "¡hoy por ser tu cumpleaños", you replace the words with "hoy por ser dia de las Madres". Affluent families may even hire mariachi musicians to serenade her.

Religious families will attend a special mass where mothers and The Virgin de Guadalupe are honored. After the mass, Mexicans hold a community breakfast of tamales, which tradition states can only be prepared when music is playing. Steaming mugs of atole (a sweet drink similar to hot chocolate, but made from corn meal and flavored with vanilla, Mexican brown sugar (piloncillo), and cinnamon are also served.

Dia de las Madres is celebrated on May 10th, regardless of the day of the week it falls on

Unlike Mother's Day in the US, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mexican Mother's Day is always celebrated on the fixed date of May 10th. In 2013 it falls on a Friday. Dinner reservations should be made early as Mexican restaurants will be crowded on May 10. Families gather, there is lively music and a complimentary treat for all the moms. If you decide to prepare dinner for her instead, then be sure to send her flowers ahead of time to decorate the festivities.
