History of Thomas Kinkade
From Placerville, California, Thomas Kinkade studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. There, he worked on his craft until he first entered the job market as an illustrator. He then saved enough money to begin painting and printing his own lithographs. His first print was published in 1984, according to his official biography, shortly after marrying his childhood sweetheart. In 1990, he founded Lightpost Publishing, making it easier to independently sell his prints.
Early in his career, Kinkade adopted a pseudonym, Robert Girrard, as a way to experiment with his style. He was inspired by French Impressionists and wanted to branch out. For many years, Kinkade was named the NALED Artist of the Year, in addition to winning many other acclaimed awards in the art world.
While many people remember Kinkade for his recognizable paintings, complete with soft colors and nostalgia, he didn’t only sell his paintings for profit. For example, all of the funds from his painting, “The Light of Freedom” were given to 9/11 victims and their families and “Hometown Pride” proceeds were given to Habitat for Humanity. Other charitable efforts that were close to Kinkade’s heart include, Make-a-Wish Foundation and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Kinkade was also a name in the sports world. In 2002, he was the official artist of the World Series and the Winter Olympics, and in 2007, Major League Baseball chose him to paint a farewell portrait of Yankee Stadium. He has also partnered with the Walt Disney Company, painting the Disney Dreams Collection. He was very active in the art and pop culture world until his death in April 2012. Years later, Kinkade’s work is still incredibly popular.
