Time to plant your spring-flowering bulbs

by webdev

September 27, 2010

Gardeners, now is time to plant your bulbs for a spring full of colorful flowers.

The best months to plant daffodils, tulips and summer-flowering bulbs like lilies are from September and November, according to the WestonSupermarePeople.com.

Autumn season is ideal to plant bulbs because the cooler temperatures allow for root development.

When selecting bulbs it is important to choose those that are undamaged and firm, the news source advises. After removing weeds and filling the soil with plant compost, plant your bulbs before they begin to sprout - usually within seven days of purchase.

Bulbs should be planted three to four times as deep as the bulb itself, two bulb-widths apart and positioned in a spot that will receive plenty of sunlight.

Plants often grow best when paired with mutually supportive plants, according to Cornell University. Tulips, for example are best planted next to certain types of geraniums such as the mayflower and the claridge druce.
