Students envision enchanted gardens for Flower Show

Kids in Portland, Maine, are writing essays describing their ideas of an enchanted garden for the Portland Flower Show's student essay contest.

The contest invites Maine residents between the ages of 6 and 18 to vie for the prizes of $50, $30 and $20 in three age categories, with winners to be announced at the opening night on March 9 and a few selections to be up for public viewing over the next three days, according to the Village Soup.

Those who wish to create enchanted gardens in their own homes or backyards can buy flowers online that lend themselves to a whimsical atmosphere.

A bouquet featuring many vivid, contrasting colors is the key to unlatching a storybook aesthetic, especially when arranged according to a "vegetative" method that mimics the way flowers grow naturally in a garden. Royal blue delphinium will complement pink tulips and bright yellow gerbera daisies as well as sprays of fuschia and bright pink flowers, AboutFlowers.com recommends. Add green foliage and ferns at random to make the bouquet more convincing.
