Practical gifts may trump love & romance flowers this year

The sales of household goods like toasters and kettles is up 22 percent from last year, and bedding is up by 20 percent, according to the survey, which was conducted by Debenhams, a UK retailer.

"The trend has been put down to cost-cutting measures and tightening of belts in the midst of a recession," said Lizzie Singleton, Debenhams spokesperson. "Instead of the usual gifts and expensive meals out, customers are opting for useful re-usable, gifts."
