Practical gifts may trump love & romance flowers this year

For couples, February 14 is a day to celebrate love, romance and passion, which is why Valentine's Day gift ideas like champagne, chocolates, flowers and lingerie have claimed the spots for the most popular items to present to a loved one. However, a recent survey found that practical gifts seem to be topping the charts this year - a higher number of women and men may be receiving toasters, irons, razors and bedding from their sweetheart.

The sales of household goods like toasters and kettles is up 22 percent from last year, and bedding is up by 20 percent, according to the survey, which was conducted by Debenhams, a UK retailer.

"The trend has been put down to cost-cutting measures and tightening of belts in the midst of a recession," said Lizzie Singleton, Debenhams spokesperson. "Instead of the usual gifts and expensive meals out, customers are opting for useful re-usable, gifts."

Valentines shoppers who are pinching pennies can still amp up the romance with discount Valentine's Day flowers. Teleflora's Radiantly Red Tulips are elegant, while the Twin Hearts Bouquet proves that Valentine's Day roses can be affordable. Both come with vases that can be used over and over again, for shoppers who are still looking for a touch of practicality.
