Hydrangeas for breast cancer and Libras

October 15, 2010

The Buchanan Garden Club in Michigan recently planted dozens of pink Annabelle hydrangeas in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, reports the Nile Star.

Leanne Feldman, one of the gardeners at the club, said the flowers were chosen not only for their vibrant pink color, but because they were able to survive Michigan's extreme winter conditions.

First discovered in Japan, hydrangeas are associated with the Libra zodiac sign and make perfect flower gifts for those born between September 24 and October 23.

Their flower meaning is said to symbolize heartfelt emotions and express gratitude for a loved one's understanding, according to The Flower Expert.

Hydrangeas bloom throughout Fall unlike other flowers which wilt in cool temperatures. They can be divided into four groups - mopheads, annabelles, oakleafs and PeeGees.

A newly found variety of cream-colored hydrangeas, called 'incrediballs', bloom up to 1 foot wide, according to the News Tribune. Incrediballs are an updated and improved version of the annabelle hydrangea.

The flower has ignited interest due to both its large size and ball shape, and its ability to grow in challenging environments.
