How to cheer up your grandparent
by

January 26, 2012
Over the holidays, families spend a lot of time together, which is especially beneficial for grandparents and other elderly relatives who reside in senior living communities or retirement homes. Now that the holidays are over, it is a good time to schedule visits to see your senior loved ones and maybe bring them a little pick-me-up.
Between the snowy, cold weather and the short days, winter can be an especially glum time of year for seniors, who may not feel entirely comfortable venturing outside because of the ice or snow. Families should take advantage of these chilly months to bring the entertainment to them.
Bring your loved one's favorite board game or a deck of cards when you visit grandma or grandpa. Making a scrapbook or photo album to look at together is another great way to spend time with a senior. Looking at pictures can help those with memory impairment remember happy family moments and may spur meaningful conversations.
It is also a nice gesture to bring or send a flower arrangement to your grandparent. Flowers have a way of brightening up the room, which is perfect for the gray days of January. You could choose
Valentine's Day flowers
or a cheerful bouquet like
Always Sunny
