Christmas flower display debuts in Pennsylvania
by
webdev
December 06, 2010
It's been called one of the best Christmas displays in the world and it's already underway at Longwood Gardens in suburban Philadelphia.
A Longwood Christmas runs through January 9 and attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
The event features hundreds of
fresh flowers
, including amaryllis, cyclamen and narcissus throughout the property's 20 indoor rooms and acres of outdoor gardens.
Other flowers featured in the displays include begonias, calla lilies, heathers, orchids, primroses and roses, although actual bloom times vary, depending on the weather.
In addition, Longwood Christmas features thousands of poinsettias, including a giant Art Nouveau tapestry made from pink poinsettias and ferns.
Other highlights include 500,000 lights, elegantly decorated trees, holiday music and dancing fountains, according to the Delaware Valley News Network.
Longwood Gardens started offering Christmas displays in the 1950s as a way to attract visitors to the conservatory during a slow time of year. Since then, the displays and visitors have multiplied, according to DelawareOnline.com.
"I have no hesitation in naming the best Christmas display in the world. It is on view at Longwood Gardens," the news source reports Robin Lane Fox, a writer for the Financial Times in London, wrote in 1998.
The gardens are opened daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and timed tickets are available for purchase online at LongwoodGardens.org.
