Activists exchange flowers for cigarette butts
by

January 04, 2011
Environmental activists in Tel Aviv recently mounted a campaign on Rothschild Boulevard to clean up litter, trading participants a flower for each cigarette butt they picked up.
According to YnetNews.com, the non-profit organization A Country without Cigarette Litter organized groups of pedestrians to help with the initiative, which is motivated by the fact that cigarette butts are the most common kind of litter in the world and a notorious cause of forest fires. At least 6 billion cigarette butts litter the streets of Israel each year, according to the news source.
"The flowers were handed out as a symbolic act which calls to beautify public places and replace the litter with a clean and green environment," activist Hanan Shteingart told the news source.

that pertain to innocence. White flowers traditionally represent unsullied, clean sentiments, which can be a powerful motivation to clean up the environment. Calla lilies, daisies, gardenias, white irises and regular
lilies
are all harbingers of purity, according to TheFlowerExpert.com.
